Welcome to the New Directions for Attorneys blog! Launched in May, 2007, New Directions is a Pace Law School program run in collaboration with the Westchester Women’s Bar Association. New Directions is a 5 1/2 month re-entry program for attorneys returning to the practice of law or transitioning to alternative legal careers. Now in our 5th year, New Directions conducts 2 sessions per year and has more than 100 graduates. Our sessions take place in New York City and in Westchester County, NY.
Our program is unique and comprehensive. The first 2 weeks of each session provide intensive legal research and writing instruction, as well as NYS CLE credit classes. The following weeks feature substantive law classes and career-related workshops. Participants complete a legal writing project, prepare resumes and cover letters, and interview for unpaid externships with our externship sponsors. The final phase of the program finds participants working a minimum of 20 hours per week in a legal or law-related field of particular interest to them. Our externship sponsors represent a wide range of public and private practice areas, government and not-for-profit agencies, corporations and the judicial system, and each takes responsibility for mentoring and supervising its New Directions participant.
New Directions operates out of offices at Pace University School of Law in White Plains, NY. Staff members include Director Amy E. Gewirtz, Esq. and Assistant Directors Carroll D. Welch, Esq. and Virginia J. Clarke, Esq.
